--- slug: thinking-processes created: 2026-05-21 updated: 2026-05-21 --- # Thinking Processes The Thinking Processes are TOC's family of logical tools for diagnosing complex problems, designing solutions, and managing the change process. Each tool answers a specific question in sequence. A Current Reality Tree (CRT) connects an organization's Undesirable Effects to the [Core Problem](core-problem.md) responsible for most of them. An Evaporating Cloud (EC) resolves an apparent dilemma by surfacing and challenging the assumptions that make two necessary actions appear mutually exclusive. A Future Reality Tree (FRT) verifies that a proposed solution injection eliminates the UDEs without introducing new ones. A Prerequisite Tree (PRT) maps the intermediate objectives a change requires. A Transition Tree (TT) sequences the specific actions and their cause-and-effect logic. A Strategy and Tactics Tree (S&T Tree) links organizational strategy to tactics across management levels. The entries here cover the full toolset: the CRT, EC, FRT, PRT, Transition Tree, and S&T Tree as the classical Thinking Process family; Necessary Cause and Sufficient Cause as the two logic types those tools compose; the Categories of Legitimate Reservations as the logic rules that keep the tools rigorous (Clarity, Entity Existence, Causality Existence, Cause Insufficiency, Additional Cause, Cause-Effect Reversal, Predicted Effect Existence, Tautology); Inherent Simplicity as the philosophical principle behind the toolset's single-constraint focus; and the Conditional Reality Tree as Youssef & Mabin's 2024 addition that handles conditional dependencies in cause-and-effect chains. The Thinking Processes are also the most contested branch of TOC in everyday adoption. Practitioners disagree on whether the full TP toolset is too complex for routine use, whether the Categories of Legitimate Reservations can be applied without formal training, and how to position the toolset relative to other diagramming and reasoning practices. The entries name the debates and attribute positions; they do not flatten the disagreement. A practical reading path follows the diagnostic order of the tools themselves: the CRT for diagnosing what is actually wrong, Core Problem for naming the convergence point the diagnosis selects, the EC for resolving the core conflict the CRT typically surfaces, the FRT for testing that the proposed injection actually works, the PRT for mapping the implementation path, the TT for sequencing the actions, and the S&T Tree for managing the change at organizational scale. Necessary Cause and Sufficient Cause supply the logic vocabulary for reading those diagrams correctly. The Categories of Legitimate Reservations sit alongside the entire toolset as the rigor mechanism that distinguishes a TP diagram from a presentation of beliefs. Inherent Simplicity and the Conditional Reality Tree sit at the edges: one is the philosophical foundation, the other is a recent addition the field is still absorbing. --- - [Next: Goal Tree (IO Map)](goal-tree.md) - [Previous: Boeing CCPM Implementation](boeing-ccpm.md)
